Always good to remember that Haiti hasn't so much been "left to rot" as repeatedly meddled with and punished by the rich countries for being the first black nation to declare independence from colonial rule.

Haiti was born in chains, forced by France to make debt repayments of $21bn over 122 years, right up until 1947, to compensate for the loss of slave trading income.

Things were bad enough there previously, I'm not sure we can really understand what they are like now. And an American politician seems to be saying that they deserved it: they do have weird ideas of their God.
