I cam back from Paris last weekend to a chilly spell here in Lewes, UK. With Claude Monet’s paintings in mind, the ones where he did series of the same scene through different light changes or seasons, I thought I would try a humble Monet tribute watching the Bronze Age defensive mound, Brach Mound, that sits outside my study window. Here it is over six consecutive days this week when Southern England was briefly plunged into unseasonal blizzard conditions before a sunny interlude and then, today, a touch of rain. As Monet demonstrated so memorably, a single place never looks the same as each moment passes. I’m lucky that my view is so distinctive, weird and memorable.

Luckily for me I have plenty of logs to put on the fire so last night I was indulgent enough to be carelessly dressed and shoeless but exceedingly cozy in front of my wood-burner stove. It was just as well because out in my back yard here in Lewes in Southern England there is still a covering of snow, and the temperature has dropped, according to my garden thermometer to  -7 Celsius or 19 Fahrenheit.
At last it feels like an old-fashioned winter even though Spring is waiting impatiently to knock on my door.
