I was going to write something irritating about Romeo and Juliet, you remember those annoying teenagers who just couldn’t keep things together, but I couldn’t bring myself to say anything cynical about them on the day that I’m writing a poem about love. I think Shakespeare found them a bit irritating too but, as he is prone to, he could still turn it into a multi-faceted piece about much more than boy meets girl. He has inspired everybody who has even the tiniest piece of sensitivity ever since.

So, instead of sneering, I’ll play some Dire Straits admitting that giving Mark Knopfler some credit is well over-due on these pages. It shouldn’t have worked, doing a modern song about Romeo and Juliet, I didn’t want it to work but, by ‘eck that man actually wrote a wonderful song –  or am I turning soppy?:

And, you know what, he could still get it right all those years later – let’s hear it again for grey-haired romantics everywhere:
