Some seagulls came to suss me out the other day when I was on the seafront. It was nice to see them especially as I was idly playing with the Hipstamatic app on my iPhone. They flew just low enough for me to take this shot. Hipstamatic enabled me to look all arty too. I’m sorry, gulls, that I didn’t have any herring heads or shark’s fins to offer you but thanks for being such good models.

I am sorry if you are bored by my latest obsession, but yesterday it was raining here in Lewes, UK and i couldn’t resist going out with my iPhone and having another play with the Hipstamatic app which turns quick snaps into arty pictures of sixty years ago. Remember this is Lewes in 2011 not 1946. Ignore the blue plastic beer barrels, they were too lovely to miss and, if you don’t like them then just humour me, I will be over this soon. Hmm, possibly.

I was at a poetry reading last night where there was a lot of Spring poems. It was obvious that a number of the people there are thrilled by the joys of Spring and up-lifted by its signs, daffodils, new growth, sunshine and lambs.

A great poet, one of the greatest, T.S. Eliot told us though that April is the cruelest month and, every year I reminded of this.

I am happy that those poets last night didn’t seem to share Eliot’s melancholy but I felt slightly awkward that I was reading a new poem, written last week, which took a harsher,  more ambivalent view of Springtime.

As a gardener though, I am up there with the optimists and my little yard is looking too fine this week for me to feel truly depressed about anything. Is that true, I wonder? There is something about the beauty of Nature and the promise of its rebirth that also talks of human frailty and promises unfulfilled.

Maybe it is too easy to just say the flowers are lovely but they certainly are.

My new iPhone app that I wrote about yesterday allowed me to take a photograph with my mobile phone which, by allowing me to corrupt the colours and contrasts, I like to think, captures something of what I mean.

A photographer friend, David Stacey  (see Links), told me about this complex and arty type of photography where you spend our in a dark room breathing in poisonous chemical fumes and getting body hairs into the liquid by mistake all in the quest for the moody art photograph.

So struggled away to show that wolfie can be quite arty with his camera if he wants to be.

Actually, I am lying. David told me about a cheap “app” for my iPhone (when I say cheap I mean £1.19)  – so I bought it, it is an iPhone camera add-on called Hipstamatic. There are other lenses too for an extra 0.59p.

Oh yes, about that lie, I didn’t spend any time at all doing these – all they are literally the first four pictures I clicked directly, within seconds, after I had uploaded the app and when I had no idea how the camera worked. Arty or what! I know that I shall have loads of fun. I almost feel like a neurotic poet from a bad 1940s movie – very hipstamatic.
