<p>I have finally got round to writing a blog now that, wisely or foolishly, the great British lockdown is being eased. Until now, I haven&#8217;t quite managed to write about this, the strangest of times. I was last on here in February for the launch of my poetry collection, <em>Remembering Blue</em>, <a href="http://www.wardwoodpublishing.co.uk/titles-poetry-colin-bell-remembering-blue.htm">http://www.wardwoodpublishing.co.uk/titles-poetry-colin-bell-remembering-blue.htm</a> After that memorable event, my last public adventure was when I went to London to see the impressive <em>Troy</em> exhibition at the British Museum. </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1806-copy-1024x576.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-19811" srcset="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1806-copy-1024x576.jpeg 1024w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1806-copy-300x169.jpeg 300w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1806-copy-768x432.jpeg 768w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1806-copy-1536x864.jpeg 1536w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1806-copy-2048x1152.jpeg 2048w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1806-copy-600x338.jpeg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /></figure>

<p>Then the curtain came down on my life outside my home here in Lewes. </p>

<p>Here are some photographs and thoughts to mark the passage from then to now. Just one person&#8217;s view on the extraordinary and, for many, the often tragic interruption to normal life that was, and still is, Covid-19. I know that I have been very lucky.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img decoding="async" width="1024" height="1024" src="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/089AA5FE-D58C-4933-928E-6114E0EC53E0-1024x1024.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-19734" srcset="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/089AA5FE-D58C-4933-928E-6114E0EC53E0-1024x1024.jpeg 1024w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/089AA5FE-D58C-4933-928E-6114E0EC53E0-300x300.jpeg 300w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/089AA5FE-D58C-4933-928E-6114E0EC53E0-150x150.jpeg 150w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/089AA5FE-D58C-4933-928E-6114E0EC53E0-768x768.jpeg 768w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/089AA5FE-D58C-4933-928E-6114E0EC53E0-1536x1536.jpeg 1536w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/089AA5FE-D58C-4933-928E-6114E0EC53E0-2048x2048.jpeg 2048w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/089AA5FE-D58C-4933-928E-6114E0EC53E0-600x600.jpeg 600w" sizes="(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>The reality sank in over Covid-19 and the long lockdown when I looked out of my window one evening. Here is my street in those weird days of silence &#8211; days went by with no one out there, it seemed. There were no cars either, but all over the world we had a clear and clean blue sky &#8211; an unexpected plus.</figcaption></figure>

I was used to spending hours alone in an empty room, so I was unfazed by the experience, especially in the early weeks. Good news comes for a writer when you hear of your work being published, , and it helped at this time that I had three new Fibonacci poems published by The Fib Review &#8211; <a href="http://www.musepiepress.com/fibreview/index.html">http://www.musepiepress.com/fibreview/index.html</a> making a total of 100 poems published in consecutive issues, over eleven years, in this impressive journal. I was chuffed by the news of those Fibs and then I heard that Ward Wood Publishing <a href="http://www.wardwoodpublishing.co.uk/author-search.htm">http://www.wardwoodpublishing.co.uk/author-search.htm</a> plan to bring them all out as a book. I didn&#8217;t need to leave the house for any of this. </figcaption></figure>

I did it for family reunions, personal training sessions, tai-chi and for my regular poetry group meetings. I worked for me, but I know several others found it distressing and isolating. I had been attracted to the internet and most of its offspring since the beginning, so I wan&#8217;t sure why people didn&#8217;t find it natural and a wonderful opportunity in a time of crisis. </figcaption></figure>

<figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="973" src="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1928-1024x973.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-19760" srcset="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1928-1024x973.jpeg 1024w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1928-300x285.jpeg 300w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1928-768x730.jpeg 768w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1928-1536x1460.jpeg 1536w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1928-2048x1946.jpeg 2048w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/IMG_1928-600x570.jpeg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px" /><figcaption>Then came the Spring, not always a season lacking cruelty, but my flowering cherry tree greeted me every time I looked out of the window and I managed even to celebrate the traditional Japanese <em>hanami</em> ceremony as usual with my neighbours &#8211; not quite as usual of course, but we raised a glass of wine to each other over the fence, acknowledging, as the Japanese do at this time, the transience of beauty, and, of course, life.</figcaption></figure>

A great moment.</figcaption></figure>

It was a moving, and, after so long a time of social isolation, an overwhelming experience to see these powerful pieces in an almost perfect setting. Maybe there was a benefit in it being a bit of an effort to book ahead, to arrive at a precise time and to go round the gallery in a small group where everyone could see and appreciate the art on display. It has been a long time since I remember seeing such a serious group of art gallery visitors where people stood, often for ten minutes of more in front of a single painting and, yes, looked.</figcaption></figure>

I hope too, that we will take some of the lessons of this period with us into the future. Let&#8217;s try not to pass on our germs to others in public places. Let&#8217;s value our personal spaces more, respect the time we need to spend alone in our own heads, and feel closer to our fellow human beings in a world where the virus treated us all as equals. I hope too that we will remain cautious over traffic pollution, and the excesses of early twenty-first century &#8216;First World&#8217; hedonism. </figcaption></figure>

I wish us all a new world where, just maybe, there will be a vaccination that works to prevent all future pandemics. </figcaption></figure>

<p>I went to one of those boarding schools where pupils were expected to pray every day even when the act of praying was, to me at least, a bit of a mystery. We spend what seemed like hours, (but what was probably only around ten minutes) on our knees in the dormitory every night before bed. Later, at my secondary school, there was a short morning chapel service every day and, yet again, there we all were, on our knees, often praying for forgiveness for sins we planned to commit as soon as the next opportunity arose. </p>

<p>It&#8217;s no surprise that my mind wandered at time like these. At first it was: </p>

<p>Who is this God? Can he really hear me? I don&#8217;t want to stop being proud of some things. Why are some sins more fun than other? Why do we have to be on our knees? The floor boards are very uncomfortable to kneel on. Are we meant to be this uncomfortable? How long is this going to last? </p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="833" height="449" src="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/https___historicroyalpalaces.picturepark.jpeg" alt="" class="wp-image-19588" srcset="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/https___historicroyalpalaces.picturepark.jpeg 833w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/https___historicroyalpalaces.picturepark-300x162.jpeg 300w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/https___historicroyalpalaces.picturepark-768x414.jpeg 768w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/https___historicroyalpalaces.picturepark-600x323.jpeg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 833px) 100vw, 833px" /><figcaption>The execution of King Charles I in 1649</figcaption></figure>

<p>Then, when I realised that there was no escape from the torture, I just gave it to my fears. I thought of being beaten (&#8216;bend over, boy!&#8217;) and then I thought of all those people, mostly kings and queens, from history books having their heads cut off. King Charles I&#8217;s execution gave me nightmares. Even he had to kneel like this, I thought. </p>

<p>Praying became something scary. Kneeling in a church pew, head bowed over the shelf where the prayers books go, it was like putting your head on the block. Don&#8217;t close your eyes &#8211; something bad will will happen.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1280" height="960" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_5080-1.jpg?fit=1024%2C768" alt="" class="wp-image-19585" srcset="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_5080-1.jpg 1280w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_5080-1-300x225.jpg 300w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_5080-1-768x576.jpg 768w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_5080-1-1024x768.jpg 1024w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_5080-1-800x600.jpg 800w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/IMG_5080-1-600x450.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px" /></figure>

<p>These memories came back to me when I wrote the poem Kneeling that is in my newly published poetry collection, Remembering Blue. I thought I would make a short film of the poem too &#8211; here it is:</p>

<figure class="wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio"><div class="wp-block-embed__wrapper">
<iframe loading="lazy" title="Kneeling - a poem-film by Colin Bell" width="1290" height="726" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ab1oQStKNmE?feature=oembed" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowfullscreen></iframe>
</div></figure>

<p>These days, I seldom kneel except when I&#8217;m doing the weeding.</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="664" height="1024" src="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/cb2-1-low-res.-copy-664x1024.jpg" alt="" class="wp-image-19547" srcset="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/cb2-1-low-res.-copy.jpg 664w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/cb2-1-low-res.-copy-195x300.jpg 195w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/03/cb2-1-low-res.-copy-600x925.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px" /></figure>

<p>The poem was my first attempt at writing in this difficult Japanese short-form poetry style. I&#8217;m still not sure if I fulfil all the demands of Haiku traditionalists, but it works for me and it acts as an appropriate preface to the collection.</p>

<p>The poem had been around for a few years before it appeared in Remembering Blue &#8211; it has even been made into a little film by my talented friend Joseph Nussbaum in the virtual world Second Life. <p>This week sees the publication of my debut poetry collection, Remembering Blue by Ward Wood Publishing. The poems were written over a period of ten years (2008 &#8211; 2018) and, even though I am also lucky enough to have two novels published (Also by Ward Wood), with two more on the way, there is something very special about having a book of my poems in print. </p>

<p>My first instinct when it came out was to hide, but I&#8217;m over that now that it is time to tell people about it, and to say how thrilling it is to hold such a stylishly-produced book in my hands. Thanks are especially due to Ward Wood and its inspirational publisher Adele Ward, who was the first to suggest that I try my hand at writing poetry. </p>

<p>I must also thank the book&#8217;s cover designer, Kayla Bell. I think it&#8217;s simply beautiful. If you see a resemblance to the cover for my second novel, Blue Notes, Still Frames, that&#8217;s because Kayla designed that cover too. Many thanks!</p>

<figure class="wp-block-image"><img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="664" height="1024" src="https://i0.wp.com/www.wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/cb2-1-low-res.-copy.jpg?fit=664%2C1024" alt="" class="wp-image-19553" srcset="https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/cb2-1-low-res.-copy.jpg 664w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/cb2-1-low-res.-copy-195x300.jpg 195w, https://wolfiewolfgang.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/cb2-1-low-res.-copy-600x925.jpg 600w" sizes="auto, (max-width: 664px) 100vw, 664px" /></figure>

<p>When the publishers&#8217; asked me to write some suggestions for the back cover blurb, I felt stumped, and wondered if I even knew what these poems were &#8216;about&#8217; &#8211; I&#8217;m probably the last one to know but I scribbled this and it will do, I guess. </p>

<p> &#8216;These poems were written during ten years recovering from a life-threatening brain haemorrhage. Poetry writing itself began for me then. The severity of the injury released hidden and repressed feelings, it began a process of rewiring my brain, focusing my mind on what life really meant, or should mean, for me.&nbsp; I was warned that I would probably cry more easily than before. That was both true and beneficial. The poems began before I left hospital. They document, often tangentially, that period, from awakening from a six-hour coma with a mysteriously fractured spine, through several years of rehabilitation, remembering and decoding &#8211; the good things as well as the bad: childhood and adolescence revisited, adult relationships reassessed, and most importantly, what is important now that I am fully recovered. Awakening from that death-like coma was a rebirth. When things were difficult, it helped to remember blue. </p>

<p>The title comes from the opening poem:</p>

<p>Haiku</p>

<p>This blank page is grey</p>

<p>I shall write rain and cloud here</p>

<p>but remember blue.</p>
