This has been a week of funerals and mourning but amidst the gloom, there was a poignant and inspiring interlude when, at one of our family gatherings, the phenomenal Scots piper James Stewart demonstrated not only his exceptional technique and musicality on this most difficult of instruments but also, as if we needed reminded, of the emotional punch that bagpipes bring. It is not only my Scottish ancestry speaking here – anyone who opens themselves to the artistry of such a player can only wonder at its range and power. This music goes straight to the heart.
