God Bless Rick Santorum but please keep him out of American politics.

I’m sure that Rick Santorum is a nice man, a good father to his eight children and, she deserves it after eight pregnancies, a good husband to his very productive wife. I’m sure too that he is sincere in his evangelical Christian beliefs and in his ultra conservative social values. Also, I’m sure that he is not a devil or a psychopath or even particularly sinful guy.

I am though delighted that he is no longer in the running as a Republican Presidential candidate in the forth-coming American presidential elections. Personally I find him rather scary but then it’s none of my business as a British citizen living thousands of miles away on the other side of the Atlantic. It isn’t just that he looks so weird but so many of his opinions are even weirder. That’s none of my business either, of course, but I probably disagree with him on everything that he says and that’s only when I understand what he is getting at. I’m sure I would be even more frightened if I understood where some of his prejudices were coming from.

He couldn’t have effected my life over here in austerity Britain that’s for sure if he had become the next American President – or  could he have? Well, yes. We are, as George Osborne, the British Chancellor of the Exchequer used to say until recently, we are all in it together. If the USA is being led by a whacky, wild-eyed fundamentalist, then we are all in trouble.

I am delighted for the USA too. Mr Santorum has stood down as a candidate because he has been advised that he wasn’t going to win the nomination even though he has had a surprizingly impressive campaign and even though a large number of American citizens support his particular brand of social  and economic intolerance. It is great news that even Mr Santorum’s supporters realize that their’s is a minority viewpoint. Let’s hope that it continues to shrink.
