So this time a dictator really does have weapons of mass destruction.

President Bashar Hafez al-Assad

So it appears that President Assad of Syria really does have weapons of mass destruction and he is threatening to use them if, fine chance, his country is invaded by any foreign forces. He says too, but who can believe him, that he won’t use them on his own people. His spokesman said yesterday: ‘these weapons are made to be used strictly and only in the event of external aggression against the Syrian Arab Republic.’ So far the only threat from these foreign forces, including the USA and the UK,  has been a lot of hot air.

President Saddam Hussein

How different from those days when the USA, with the UK running along behind, sent their armies into Iraq on the grounds that President Saddam Hussein had developed, yes, remember them, weapons of mass destruction. We know now of course, that there were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

At least too, we know now that the USA and the UK don’t necessarily mean what they say when they rattle their sabres. Let’s hope, though I doubt it,  that the oil sanctions imposed on Syria will save its citizens from the slaughter that is continuing in that chaotic state. Post Iraq and Afghanistan, countries where the USA and the UK governments bungled whilst their soldiers died, routing out real weapons of mass destruction might be a policy from yesteryear. I fear, in the future,  for the citizens of any country unlucky enough to be ruled by murderous dictators.
