There were a lot of jokes, some of them funny, yesterday about the ancient Mayan theory of the end of the World. We are, of course, so superior in our view of ourselves that we take comfort in patronising ancient theories. I wonder if it is really fear that encouraged all that jollity yesterday when the World didn’t end.
It will end of course, a long time into the future, we hope, and that is what the Mayans were saying too. Let’s not get too smug about our own world view. We of course think we’ll live forever. Let’s remember too, before we laugh too loudly, that the world did end yesterday for too many people.
